Gum or Periodontal Disease is now the leading cause of tooth loss in Ireland. Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and bone around teeth and if allowed to continue untreated can eventually mean the loss of teeth. It is now believed that gum disease affects the heart and arteries. It is possible to have periodontal disease and have no warning signs.
In fact in its early to moderate stages it is often undetectable except by a dentist. That is why at the Bishopstown Dental Clinic we thoroughly examine your gums at each check-up and normally we recommend having your teeth scaled and polished at least every six months. Having regular scalings has been proven to be effective in the fight against gum disease along with:
- Twice daily brushing
- Flossing
The good news is that Periodontal Disease can be treated and prevented. Treatment for gum disease usually involves scaling or scaling and root planning for more advanced cases. Our dentists will spot signs of periodontal disease during your regular check-up; but signs for you to look out for are bleeding gums, sensitive teeth (especially sensitive to hot and cold foods), loose gums and mobile teeth.
Not coming for your regular cleaning and check-up will greatly increase your chances of getting Periodontal Disease and may lead to more complex and expensive treatment.
