Implants
Implants have revolutionised the practice of dentistry. Up to relatively recently the only option to replace missing teeth were bridges or dentures. Both of these have their disadvantages: bridges involve cutting down adjacent teeth and may be unsuitable to replace large gaps; dentures are removable and can be bulky.
A dental implant is essentially a substitute for a natural root and commonly it is screw or cylinder shaped. The implant is normally placed in the jaw for three months to allow it to bond or integrate to the jaw bone –it can then be used to hold an artificial tooth/teeth. It will look and feel like a natural tooth
There are many different systems of implants. At Bishopstown Dental Clinic we exclusively use the Nobel Biocare. This is the most tried and tested system and it has a world-wide support system./p
