Root Canal
Root Canal treatment involves taking out the pulp (‘nerve’) of a tooth in order to save a tooth which would otherwise have to be extracted. Modern techniques make the procedure pain-free and highly successful.
Root Canal treatment is most often needed when you are getting pain from a tooth that has:
- A large or deep cavity
- A large or deep filling
- Received a blow
If you are getting pain from a tooth at night this is usually a sign that the tooth will need root canal or extraction. Although root canal is more expensive than having the tooth extracted the benefits of saving the tooth normally outweigh having it extracted. At the Bishopstown Dental Clinic we will advise you on whether it is better to save or extract the tooth but bear in mind that:
Saving the tooth with a root canal will work out less expensive than having it extracted and later replacing it with a bridge or an implant.
Extracting the tooth will lead to drifting and over eruption of your remaining teeth which can lead to further dental problems.
Modern root canal treatment is pain-free and should be just like having a prolonged filling.
