Tooth Coloured Fillings
There are many types of filling materials. The introduction of tooth-coloured fillings such as glass ionomers and composites which are adhered to a tooth by a process called bonding has revolutionised dentistry. Bonding increases the strength of a filled tooth and can be used to improve the appearance of front teeth. It has considerably reduced the need for more complex procedures such as crowns and veneers.
Composites are the commonest type of tooth-coloured materials and are composed of glass particulates suspended in a resin matrix. They are highly aesthetic and in certain situations can equal the appearance of crowns but at a fraction of the cost. Their use includes the restoration of dental cavities, the replacement of dental amalgam (silver fillings), and the restoration of teeth when they have been worn or chipped away. In addition, composites are often used for aesthetic reasons to enhance the contour, shape, colouring or relative position of the front teeth.
